First Baby Purchase!

I've made my first official baby item purchase this weekend. I'm not counting the pregnancy tests I used, or the $500 check for the midwife. ;)

Yeah, baby wipes! I can't have too many of those, can I? Hopefully it'll last a couple of months at least. But I'm planning to buy a box every time I go to Costco. Clean bottoms are important 'round here. ;)

Another thing that I forked over some cash for was this lotion.

I'm trying to lotion up after every shower. I'm hoping to avoid stretch marks on my tummy with faithful moisturizing. I also make Chris do my back, it gets so itchy otherwise. Oh yeah, I like backrubs. :D This is the only lotion that hasn't made Chris rush off to the bathroom to wash his hands as soon as he's done rubbing me.

My sister-in-law that's due one week before me is WAY ahead of me in baby stuff. She's got a whole room dedicated to the baby, matching furniture set, and now says all she needs is a rug and the baby! I feel very behind compare to her. But Chris pointed out so long as the baby has clean clothes and diapers, plenty of boob time, a comfy spot to sleep, and plenty of lovin', it'll do just fine. My wallet thanks him. ;)

In other news, my baby sister went sky diving!! No, the picture is not upside down, her boyfriend is. :P

Sarah figured she better do this stuff before she starts having any kids! Good thinking.

In other family news, Pops is doing better! He's in rehab right now, and eagerly waiting to get home, I'm sure. Dad and Sarah cleaned up a couple rooms for him this weekend. I may or may not have had a moment of relief that people don't expect me to do heavy duty stuff now. ;) No filling up trash bags, no carrying full ice chests up the stairs, and no more carrying the laundry baskets. My tummy doesn't like the pressure of the basket. I've resorted to two Ikea bags for the clothes.

I'm at 15.5 weeks... and still in normal clothes! I did find a pair of maternity jeans at the thrift store for $10 and snatched them up. They fit well everywhere except on the tummy - too big. :)

Before you stock up too much, google around and there are many home made tips such as paper towels with some water and I want to say olive oil? It's been awhile. But some babies bums are sensitive especially at first to the chemicals in the store bought ones. And it is MUCH cheaper. Just use that first tub to store your home made ones.

I totally agree with your husband. Your baby will be loved and that is all they need!
I know with my first one, I was just like you. I didn't have everything for the baby because money was tight. And it was hard not to be jealous of all my friends and family who were expecting and stocking up. In the end, everything comes together.
So don't stress and think you are any less a mother. Things will be all good in the end.

Lol* Your Hubby is right about baby - I can promise you your little one won't mind if you're behind with the decorating as long as you're on time with dinner!

We also did the same thing with both of our girls that you are doing - when I was pregnant we bought one or two packages of diapers every time we went grocery shopping. We didn't have to buy diapers for my oldest daughter until she was 4 months old!

I am esp. proud of the fact that J's whole nursery is thrifted, minus shower gifts :) I am too sleep deprived to remember what else I want to say. can you stock up on SLEEP? LOL
are you on facebook?
glad your dad is better. xoxo mel

What an exciting time! Babies don't need a lot and people will give you lots I'm sure. I didn't have to buy anything for the first 6 months for both my girls. Do your research and go for the basics when you do decided to shop..I had so many nearly new things left over from my first....particularly outfits! I so rarely "dressed up" my girls when they were newborn and tended to keep them in sleepers as it was the most comfortable thing for them.

Saw your comment on Small Notebook and had to click, because of your First Baby Purchase post. Congrats! Strange thing--I'm a Leah S. also and am also due May 2010!

Hi Leah - Just make sure you get a hold of these things maybe a month before you're due (Don't worry! You have another 25 weeks).

- Diaper pail
- Bassinet (those cribs are HUGE! This will fit beside your bed for and work for at least 1-2 months)
- 3 packs of 0-3 month and 3-6 month onsies.
- Breast pump (yeah, it may feel weird to buy it now, but you'll need it!)
- Lansinosh brand lanolin (I think I butchered the spelling on that, but it's the kind LLL recommends and is packaged in a purple tube)

Seriously, these are the items that you can't have your hubby or family buy for you because they will always buy the WRONG one.

I didn't have any of them. We literally had wipes, diapers, and some clothing. Nothing else.

The first week was awful as J ran all around town looking for the things on my list. We should have been chilling and recovering instead of all stressed out.

Especially make sure you have the lanolin and breast pump. Husbands are great and I love mine dearly, but there are some things they just can't understand and cracked, sore nipples are one of them.

Don't stress, you have plenty of time and your belly will definitely catch up with your pants, just give it a month!

Leah,
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I hate to tell you but that big, huge pack of baby wipes will only last you about 4 weeks with a newborn. There will be a few weeks where you'll be changing the baby 10-14 times a day. I should know. In the past 11 years, I've changed over 20,000 diapers on my 5 kids.

We started out with very little for our first baby because of tight finances and no gifts/baby shower. You really don't need all the "stuff".
A place for the baby to sleep-crib, bassinet, your bed.
A garbage can and plastic grocery bags work as well as any diaper pail.
18 outfits for inside and 2-3 for outside. (You probably won't be going out much the first few weeks. Layette gowns (with the elastic at the bottom) are much easier on mom for those middle of the night/half-asleep diaper changes than anything with snaps or zippers.
6-10 receiving blankets-good for spit up and accidents will happen
Diapers, baby wipes, baby soap
Love, patience and relaxed mommy.
Beyond this you really don't "need" anything.

Relax and enjoy this transition time.
